River Adventures at Sleningford Watermill🌿
The River Ure is one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful and accessible rivers — and Sleningford Watermill is the perfect place to enjoy it. Whether you’re gliding downstream by canoe or kayak, coming for a day of fishing or simply dipping your toes in the shallows, this peaceful stretch of water is ideal for adventure, relaxation, and family fun.
We welcome day canoeists and kayakers bringing their own equipment to paddle within our park boundaries. To help us manage numbers and keep everyone safe, we do ask that all visitors follow our Paddlers’ Terms and Conditions and get in touch before arriving.

🛶 Before You Paddle or Fish
We want everyone to enjoy the River Ure safely and responsibly. Whether you’re here for a peaceful paddle or a day of family fun, please take a moment to read the information below before heading out on the water. Pre-booking ensures access and facilities are available when you arrive. All visitors use the river at their own risk.
Paddling Information
- Day Paddlers: £7.50 per person
- Pre-booking required – please contact us before your visit
Winter (Nov–Mar):
- Pre-booking is essential
- Site closed 24th–26th December
- Toilets and main gates locked outside pre-booked times
Summer (Apr–Oct):
- Priority is given to overnight guests
Please email ahead to confirm river access as the site can get full
Safety Guidelines (British Canoeing)
- 🚣 Don’t paddle alone – always go with others
- 🦺 Wear a buoyancy aid (and a helmet where needed)
- 🗺️ Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll return
- 🌤️ Check weather, water levels, and conditions before setting off
- 🧭 Stay flexible and prioritise group safety at all times

Fishing at Sleningford
- Fly-fishing only (coarse fishing is not permitted)
- Day tickets available at reception – please bring a valid Environment Agency Rod Licence
- 🎟️ £10 half day | £15 full day
- Fishing season: 1st April – 30th September

River Access Restrictions
Please note that access to the River Ure beyond Sleningford’s boundaries is limited:
- Upstream (Mickley): Check local club agreements before paddling
- Downstream (Ripon): Access by special permission only – this area is a protected SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and often closed in
spring and summer
